Jeff is a total original. He is one of those rare musicians that make everyone feel amazingly free yet fully aware and on their toes. I first met and played with him at the Broomhill Art Hotel in Devon last year with Julian Siegel and Phil Donkin (who in his inimitable way said in the break that playing with you, Jeff, is challenging yet rewarding (laughs, all)). I remember the whole occasion with great joy. A few months ago, my mother came to visit, went to see him play and then affectionately refered to him as ‘die Katze’ (the cat) because of the graceful-playful way he touches the drums. She took great care in imitating his way of playing for my better understanding of her metaphor. When I communicated this to Jeff he seemed to know what she had meant. HK
